Push-to-talkhold-to-talk
Push-to-talk is an activation style where recording runs only while a key is held down: press, speak, release, done. It borrows its name from two-way radios.
For dictation, holding a key is the lowest-friction contract available: there is no window to open, nothing to click, and the release of the key is an unambiguous signal that you are finished, which lets the software commit the text immediately.
Common alternatives are toggle activation (tap to start, tap to stop) for longer passages, and voice activation, where the tool arms itself and starts when it hears speech.
