Flit vs Wispr Flow

The #1 local alternative

The subscription leader, in the cloud

The short answer

Flit is the local alternative to Wispr Flow: the same instant, formatted dictation on a Mac, without the cloud, the account, or the monthly bill. Flow processes your voice and your screen context on its servers and charges every month, forever. Flit does the same job entirely on your machine, adds a codebase index and formatting that cannot drift, and costs $49 once. If you dictate on a Mac and would rather your words stayed there, Flit is the one to switch to. Flow keeps the edge only if you also dictate on Windows, iPhone, or Android.

Why people pick Flit

  • Nothing leaves your Mac. No audio, no text, no screen context. You can verify that with a network monitor.
  • One payment instead of a subscription that never ends.
  • No account. Flit never asks who you are.
  • It works on a plane, in a tunnel, and on the day their service has an outage.
  • Times, spoken punctuation, and your dictionary are handled by fixed rules, so they cannot drift.

In fairness

  • Four platforms against our one. If you dictate on a phone or a Windows machine, Flit simply cannot help you.
  • Your dictionary and snippets sync across your devices, because there is an account holding them.

Listed because they are true. None of them changes the answer if you dictate on a Mac and want your words to stay there.

What actually decides it

The screen context difference

Both apps use what is on your screen to write better replies. Wispr Flow sends that context to its servers to do it. Flit reads the focused text field locally, keeps it in memory for exactly one dictation, and never writes it anywhere. Same feature, opposite trust model. If you dictate about customers, patients, or unreleased work, that difference is the whole decision.

What a subscription costs over time

Flit is $49 once. A dictation subscription at a typical monthly rate passes that inside a year and keeps going. We are not going to pretend a subscription is never worth it: it buys ongoing model improvements and multi-device sync. But if you want a tool that keeps working at a fixed cost, the maths only points one way.

Questions

Can I switch from Wispr Flow without changing how I work?

On a Mac, yes: both put finished text at your cursor from a keypress, in any app. The differences are where transcription happens, whether there is an account, and how you pay. On iPhone, Windows, or Android, Flit is not an option at all.

Does Wispr Flow work offline?

No. It processes in the cloud, so it needs a connection. Flit runs its models on your Mac and works with wifi turned off.

Which is faster?

Both show text as you speak, and both state 4x faster than typing, but the numbers underneath differ. Flow pairs benchmark rates: 220 words per minute of speech against 45 for a keyboard. Flit pairs measured ones: 124 words per minute across 500+ real dictations, including pauses and thinking, against about 31 for composition typing. Ours is a floor rather than a ceiling. Industry speaking benchmarks run well above 124, so a fast native English speaker should expect to beat our own figure.
